ACTS Prayer Model

The early church in the book of Acts started with Prayer. That’s why we started our series on the book of Acts with Prayer. Prayer is a conversation with God that teaches us dependence and helps us to trust and follow Jesus. To be a disciple and a disciple making church, we must learn and practice prayer.

The Acts Prayer model is not meant to be a formula, but rather a simple way of engaging in a holistic conversation with God.

Adoration
In Adoration we Proclaim how magnificent He is.
By showing God our adoration, we are putting God above ourselves and our problems. Lifting His Name high. Worshiping God for His wonderful and miraculous ways. Praising God for who He is, what He has done, and what He can do!

Usually we sit in the presence of our problems
Through Adoration, we sit in greatness of His Presence

And being in God’s presence, is what our souls were created for.

Confession
Confession is admitting and confessing your sin to God so your prayers will not be hindered. Avoid being general about sin. As you confess over time, your confession will get more and more specific. This may lead you to confess your sin to a brother or sister in Christ as instructed in Scripture.

Confession is a normal part of the Christian life. - Like taking a bath or shower every day, it’s how we keep focused on living a holy life, set apart for God’s special use.

Thanksgiving
Giving thanks for what God has done for you in Christ and all the ways he has provided for you is central to God’s explicit will for your life. We always have reason to be thankful, even with the hard things present in our lives. As we pray, God will use our gratefulness to change our perspective.

Specific Prayer Requests/ Stuff - This is Self defining
Scripture repeatedly invites us to bring our requests to God. Jesus taught and modeled this with his disciples

1. Which of these aspects of prayer do you spend the most time on and why?

2. Which of these aspects of prayer do you spend the least time on or avoid and why?

3. How does this model change how you think about prayer?

Take some time to pray through each letter of the model corporately.  On C for Confession - let that be a minute or two of silent prayer, personal before God.

Don’t forget: Two weeks from today is our monthly community night where our life groups gather together over a meal or activity! Please spend some time as a group deciding what you want to do.

Please pray for who in your life God wants you to invite, and think about how you can reach out and invite them in the next couple of weeks.

Scripture

1 Thessalonians 5:16-19 (NLT) - 16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 19 Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.
